The work of The Friends

Founded in 1939 by Bishop George Bell, The Friends organisation was established to work alongside the Dean & Chapter in their task of maintaining the Cathedral as a centre of worship, and to help develop the Cathedral's outreach and mission in the local community and beyond. Seventy years on, it still fulfills this role.

During this time, The Friends have contributed well over £1 million which has been spent on projects both great and small, enabling the Cathedral to be properly maintained for the worship of God in the most beautiful surroundings.

Being a Friend enables you to be part of a caring and outgoing group of people who provide fellowship and a friendly welcome to all. Friends enjoy a full programme of events throughout the year.

Of those who live locally, many Friends play an active role in other aspects of Cathedral life, becoming doorkeepers, guides and stewards to name but a few.

The Cathedral is always happy
to welcome new volunteers.
